Peter Derek V. Prince

Peter Derek V. Prince (1915, Bangalore, India – 21 Oct 2003), Bible teacher, charismatic author. Born to a military family in Bangalore, Prince’s father was an officer and his mother the daughter of a major general. He studied classics at Eton and specialised in philosophy at Cambridge; in 1940 he was elected a fellow of King's College Cambridge. In July 1941 while serving in the army in the Royal Medical Corps in Yorkshire, he was converted to Christianity. At the end of the war, he served with the Army in Jerusalem, seeing the return of the Jews to their homelands as a fulfilment of prophecy. Returning to England in 1949, he pastored a small pentecostal church in central London. In 1957 he took the leadership of a teacher's College in Kenya, in 1963 moving to the USA to pastor in Seattle before taking up itinerant teaching. By 1968 he was living in the Fort Lauderdale area. He built up a significant following through his teaching on deliverance from demonic powers in believers, and his teaching on the prophetic role of Israel. In 1973 he helped found Intercessors for America. There he became associated with Don Basham, Bob Mumford, Ern Baxter, and Charles Simpson as the principal leaders of the shepherding movement. Prince's Discipleship, Shepherding and Commitment (1976) was a concise biblical defense of the movement. In 1983, Prince left the movement over doctrinal reasons, though Moore suggests that it may also have had to do with strained relationships over opposition to his remarriage. By 2001, Prince was living in Jerusalem and his ministry was located in Charlotte NC, running a global teaching ministry centred on a daily radio broadcast “Today With Derek Prince”, which reached more than half the world and includes translations into Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Malagasy, Mongolian, Russian, Samoan, Spanish and Tongan. He authored more than 40 books, over 450 audio and 150 video teaching cassettes, many of which have been translated and published in more than 60 languages. His books included Shaping History Through Prayer and Fasting and The Spirit-filled Believer’s Handbook.
