14 The Fining Pot for the Silver, but the Furnace for the Gold [poem]

W. J. N.

THE FINING POT FOR THE SILVER, BUT THE FURNACE FOR THE GOLD.

The fining pot for the silver,
But the furnace for the gold;
Oh, wonderful, wonderful story,
By the sacred pages told;
For the Lord is testing His people,
And trying them one by one,
Till the choicest places around His throne,
Believing hearts have won.

 The fining pot for the silver,
But the furnace for the gold;
Tis ever now at the present time
As it was in the days of old,
When the Hebrew children walked unharmed
Through the heart of the roaring fire,
And the Son of God was with them there
In the midst of the conflict dire.

 He stands by the crucible watching,
His silver glowing bright,
But down in the furnace, along with the gold,
He goes through the fiercest fight;
When the enemy presses hardest,
His grasp is firm and strong,
He holds us up that we may not fall,
Though the battle is fierce and long.

 Oh, children of dust and ashes! keep
Your eyes on the Saviour’s face;
Each fiery trial that tests your faith
But brings you nearer the place
Where the Lord can take you and put you
Among His treasures rare,
To glitter among His jewels,
In the many mansions fair.

 When each one has come through the furnace,
Silver and gems and gold,
While the chaff, and the wood, and the stubble,
Have passed like a story told;
And there in the mansions of glory,
For ever we shall shine,
Reflecting with brightest lustre,
The light of His face divine.
